It can be hard to tell, but recognising Stalking signs is the first step toward understanding.

Stalking isn’t the problem. Not knowing what it really is - that’s the problem.

It’s more complicated than most realise. So why are harmful actions often overlooked? Why isn’t harm always treated as a crime? Stalking can look different — cat-and-mouse games, involving others, or slow, corrosive harm many don’t recognise. If you’re done with myths, excuses, and silence, this newsletter is for you. At the Northumbria Stalking Interventions Launch 2024, Caroline Saul captured the reality of non-partner stalking in one line: “You can’t end a relationship with a stalker — because it isn’t your relationship to end. It’s theirs.”

For over thirty years, I have lived with non-partner stalking and its associated violence - an ongoing form of gendered abuse that has shaped almost every decision in my personal and professional life. It is not something I chose, nor can I end, but it has directly informed the work I do.

Living with this reality taught me to recognise small signals of safety and risk, and to understand how environments (homes, workplaces, and communities) can either protect or expose people. This awareness guided me into a career in social housing and community safety, where I combined lived experience with professional expertise to support people navigating harm, uncertainty, or displacement. I saw firsthand that issues of safety are not abstract; they affect financial stability, wellbeing, and sense of self.

Over time, my need to understand these patterns more deeply led me into academia. Studying critical criminology provided the tools to connect personal experience of stalking to broader research on state harms, systemic violence, power, and community responses. I now combine first-hand experience with academic study and professional practice to analyse how stalking, coercive control, and systemic failure intersect.

This journey has also led me to found Hilton & McEwan Stalking Intervention and Prevention CIC and to develop the Hilton & McEwan Learning Network. Together with a growing network of associates, we create and share evidence-based interventions, training, and resources. Our mission, #SLFA (Safer Living For All), focuses on reducing risk, supporting survivors, and building safer, informed communities.

What others say

  • I attended your session yesterday and I wanted to reach out and let you know how impactful you were, and how moved I was by your experience but equally how energised I felt by your presentation. You are an incredible woman, and your voice, your honesty and your commitment are incredibly empowering. Thank you, seems such a small thing to say for what you shared, but I mean it wholeheartedly.
